Commemoration

Survivors Fund (SURF) each year supports a number of commemoration events to mark the anniversary of the genocide on and around the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda on 7th April.

This year, we are supporting the commemoration event organised by the West Midlands Rwanda Community Association in Coventry on 7th April. As well, a new commemoration event organised by the Berkshire Rwandese Community in Reading on 6th April.

In previous years, we have organised a commemoration event in London, but this year we are supporting the commemoration event organised by the Rwanda High Commission UK  at Southwark Cathedral on 11th April.

As well, the Director of Survivors Fund (SURF) will be speaking following a special screening of Coexist, the remarkable independent documentary film examining the unique social experiment of reconciliation in Rwanda. The screening is at the Wiener Library on Wednesday 4th April at 630pm. Attendance is free, but booking is advised (email the library here or call 020 7636 7247)

Survivors Fund (SURF) has developed a number of materials which are freely available for any groups that plan to organise their own commemoration events. We have a series of testimonies that can be downloaded from the website of the UN Outreach Programme on the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. In addition, with our partner Foundation Rwanda, we established a website with further resources for those that wish to organise a Reading of the Testimonies.

In addition Survivors Fund (SURF) supports a number of commemoration events through our partner organisations in Rwanda. This is all the more critical in light of the need to address genocide denial, and ensure that the victims of the genocide are remembered.
