We commemorated this past month, the 3rd Anniversary of the loss of Benon Banya, SURF’s accountant. And a friend to all.
He died undertaking a climb on Mount Kilimanjaro in 2013 to raise money for SURF. A long-time supporter, this was not his first such fundraising mission, as a few years prior he had undertaken a sponsored cycle ride from London to Paris.

A fund in his memory (The Benon Memorial Fund) was established to continue his legacy and support the education of genocide survivors in Rwanda.
As a result, twelve university students (Benon Scholars) have benefited from this fund to complete their Bachelor’s Degree in fields such as Accounting and Information Technology.
One such student is a remarkable girl who is undertaking her degree in Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Rwanda College of Science and Technology with the support of the Benon Memorial Fund.
