Commemoration

Survivors Fund (SURF) has supported a number of commemoration events in the UK, and further afield too, to mark the 19th Anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi.

We supported the commemoration event of members of the Rwandan community living in Scotland at St Mary Star of the Sea Parish Centre in Edinburgh on 7th April. The programme included the screening of the testimony of Daphrose Mukangarambe, as well as a film on fifteen years of SURF’s work supporting survivors. The event was organised by Nyinawumuntu Marie Claire and Rubayiza Didier, with speakers including Professor Gerda Siann, representing Rwanda Scotland Alliance and Dr Callum Henderson, Incoming Honorary Consul for Scotland.

On Thursday 11th April, we will be supporting the commemoration event of the Berkshire Rwandan Community Association at the Civic Centre in Reading (at 6pm), as well as the commemoration event of the West Midlands Rwandan Community Association at The Drum in Birmingham on Saturday 13th April (at 3pm).

Survivors Fund (SURF) is also supporting a number of other international commemoration events, including the MCW Commemoration at NYU Law School in New York on Sunday 14th April (at 2pm).

Wherever, and with whoever, you will be commemorating the anniversary of the genocide this year, we appeal to you to remember the survivors as well as the victims of the genocide, and their ongoing call for restorative justice.

Wishing you strength over the days ahead.
