SURF is fortunate to be supported in its work by two great teachers, Andy Lawrence of Hampton School and Sam Hunt of Sandhurst Comprehensive. Their work has been profiled in a comprehensive feature in The Guardian.

Andy has been developing a new collection of educational materials and lesson plans to update those that we currently make freely available to teachers through our website. In order to ensure that we are offering the right content, we are undertaking a preliminary survey amongst UK schools to develop a greater understanding of if and how the Rwandan genocide is taught. If you are a teacher, or you can forward on to a teacher, this important survey – then it will be greatly appreciated. Please do check back to the blog in due course as we will share the results.

Sam is currently working on scaling up the Reaching Rwanda project, a citizenship project connecting UK schools with young survivors of the genocide in Rwanda. The project has already helped to raise thousands of pounds for SURF which has been used to provide school fees and buy livestock for survivors. Sam discussed the programme recently on BBC Radio Berkshire.

Teaching on Rwanda, and raising awareness of the situation of survivors of the genocide today, is only possible with the teachers willing and able to undertake that work. For the efforts of Andy, Sam and all other teachers helping us in that end, thank you.
